Lansoprazole belongs to a group of drugs called proton pump inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of acid made in the stomach.

Lansoprazole is used to treat frequent persistent heartburn, gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD; ulcers in the upper part of the intestine (duodenal ulcer) or stomach (gastric ulcer).


  • Do not take lansoprazole, if you are allergic to lansoprazole , or to any of the other ingredients in lansoprazole.
  • Do not take lansoprazole, if you are taking an anti-HIV medication called atazanavir.
  • Talk with your doctor before taking lansoprazole, if you have serious liver disease; osteoporosis (thinning and weakening of bones) or if you experience diarrhea while taking lansoprazole or if you are taking corticosteroids.
